Age-related Impacts on Glycemic Response
July 2026

New research from our team was recently published in Nature, investigating age-related differences in glycemic response and glycemic index.
The glycemic index (GI) ranks the blood glucose response to a carbohydrate food relative to an equivalent carbohydrate amount of glucose. Its use in diabetes management and in mitigating cardiovascular and other disease risk has made it a feature in dietary guidelines worldwide, though its clinical utility has sometimes been questioned. Through a series of publications, our team has shown that when calculated correctly in accordance with the ISO methods, GI is a robust tool applicable to most people. This paper adds to that evidence, demonstrating that GI values do not differ by age. A GI value determined in an older population is not different than a GI value determined in a younger population, even when the age gap exceeds 20 years. These findings further solidify GI as a rigorous, broadly valid tool, when calculated correctly.
