Highlights from ASN Nutrition 2026
August 2026
ASN Nutrition 2026 in Washington, DC was several intensive days of learning about emerging nutrition science, sharing our research, and connecting with clients and colleagues.
Here is a summary of some of the scientific sessions that we found particularly relevant:
Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses
A workshop focused on the interpretation and conduct of systematic reviews and meta-analyses, emphasizing the importance of rigorous methodology for generating reliable data.
Ultra-Processed Foods
Defining ultra processed foods was a discussion focus of several sessions. Emerging evidence sheds light on the hyper-palatability and energy-density drivers of caloric intake, rather than processing.
GLP-1 Receptor Agonists
Research on GLP-1RA user populations was prominently featured in the poster sessions, highlighting the growing body of research in this area that is expected to reach publication in the coming months.
Protein Intake and Muscle Protein Synthesis
The new dietary guideline recommendation of 1.2–1.6 g/kg/day of protein was discussed in several sessions. Research also highlighted the interaction between protein intake and physical activity. Walking or squatting after a protein-containing meal increased muscle protein synthesis, with a greater response observed in older adults. The response to protein was dose-dependent but appeared to plateau at approximately 0.3 g/kg per meal.
Plant-Based Diets and Muscle Growth
Evidence presented at the meeting indicated that plant-based diets can support muscle growth when adequate protein is consumed, reinforcing the importance of total protein intake and overall dietary adequacy.
Thank you to the team at ASN and we are looking forward to Nutrition 2027 in Las Vegas!
